Here’s Why Spring Allergies Are Arriving Earlier
If it feels like your seasonal allergies are starting sooner and hitting harder, you’re not imagining it. Across the United States, spring allergy season is beginning earlier, lasting longer, and bringing more intense symptoms than in years past.
Emerging research suggests that shifts in climate patterns are playing a significant role in how pollen behaves—and how your body responds.
What the Research Shows
A recent review published in The Laryngoscope analyzed 30 studies conducted between 2000 and 2023, focusing on changes in pollen trends and their connection to climate factors.
More than half of these studies found that longer pollen seasons, higher pollen counts, or both were linked to climate change. In fact, one study projected that by the end of the century, pollen emissions in the U.S. could double, with allergy seasons lasting nearly three weeks longer.
Researchers also observed that between 2016 and 2020:
Daily maximum temperatures were higher
Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels increased
Grass pollen levels were significantly elevated
Together, these findings point to a strong relationship between rising CO₂ levels and increased pollen production.
Additional studies found that:
Higher humidity and CO₂ levels can increase the potency and amount of allergenic pollen
Rainfall can temporarily reduce pollen by clearing it from the air
Why Your Symptoms May Feel Worse
With longer exposure to higher concentrations of pollen, your immune system has more opportunities to react. This can lead to:
More persistent symptoms
Increased severity of congestion, sneezing, and itchy eyes
Greater reliance on medications
For many patients, what used to be a short seasonal inconvenience is now a prolonged and disruptive condition.
Finding Relief That Works for You
The good news is that you don’t have to simply “push through” allergy season.
Personalized allergy care can identify your specific triggers and create a treatment plan tailored to your lifestyle. Depending on your needs, this may include:
Targeted medications
Environmental control strategies
Allergy immunotherapy for long-term relief
If spring allergies are interfering with your daily life, it may be time to take a more proactive approach.
